Rihanna's Hairstylist, Yusef Williams, On How to Get Her VMAs Ponytail: Rock the Look

Welcome to Billboard.com’s newest series, “Rock the Look”, where celebrity makeup artists recreate their client's most iconic, current and covetable looks on a Billboard editor or artist super-fan. This week, Rihanna's hairstylist, Yusef Williams, shows us how to recreate the singer's new signature, an ultra high and flirty ponytail from the VMAs.

To get RiRi's look, Yusef misted Kat's hair with water and straightened her naturally curly locks (done off camera) with the ghd Platinum Styler, a flat iron known for distributing heat evenly and reducing breakage by 50%. He then sprayed a light, texturizing spray all over, flipping the head upside down and brushing everything forward with ghd's Oval Dressing Brush. Yusef then gathered the hair at the top of the head, setting it with a holding spray, like Matrix Biolage Hydrasource Hydra-Seal Spray and combing it into a secure, tight hair tie.

To add drama and volume to both Rihanna and Kat's hair, Yusef chose natural hair extensions similar in texture and color and wrapped them around the base of the ponytail, masking the hair tie and securing the extensions with tiny hairpins (Yusef prefers hair pins instead of Bobby pins for maximum hold). Then, working a razor and comb through the hair, he sectioned off parts of the pony, backcombing and splitting them to create texture.

Finishing off the look, Yusef straightened random pieces of hair with the ghd Platnium Styler and brushed down the baby hairs with a dollop of Ampro Protein Styling Gel tinted brown.
