Professional esports league Overwatch has revealed that Zedd will perform for its Overwatch League Grand Finals on Sept. 29. The Grammy-winning DJ and producer will play for a sold-out crowd at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
According to Blizzard Entertainment which produces Overwatch, Zedd is the perfect artist for the gig given his enthusiastic involvement in the league as one of the top ranked players. Zedd is a Grandmaster, the highest rank you can achieve in Overwatch’s competitive ranked mode, meaning he plays within the top one percent of all Overwatch players.
“The 2019 Overwatch League Grand Finals is the pinnacle moment in esports, the culmination of 85 match days, 302 matches, and 560 hours of hard-fought competitive play,” Activision Blizzard Esports CMO Daniel Cherry tells Billboard. “The environment has to match the intensity and excitement of the event itself, and when it comes to creating the soundtrack for the world’s best Overwatch League esports players, I couldn’t pick a better artist and bigger fan than Zedd.”
Cherry adds: “Not only is he a multi-platinum, Grammy award-winning artist, but he’s also a highly ranked Overwatch player and one of the Best of Us. We know he’ll make this an unforgettable experience for the players, the fans in Philadelphia and the millions more who will be watching around the world.”
Zedd’s pre-show performance will help celebrate the final two teams duking it out for the championship starting at 3pm ET. The winning team will take home $1.1 million.
The Sunday, Sept. 29 event is sold out but fans can also check out the Overwatch League Grand Finals and Zedd’s set being live-streamed via Twitch.
