Zedd & Alessia Cara Zoom to No. 1 on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs With ‘Stay’

Plus, Little Dragon debuts on Top Dance/Electronic Albums and Xenia Ghali tops on Dance Club Songs.

Zedd and Alessia Cara zip 5-1 on Billboard‘s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart (dated May 6) with “Stay.”

The collab is the third No. 1 for the DJ/producer, tying him with Calvin Harris for the second-most leaders in the chart’s four-year history; The Chainsmokers lead all acts with six No. 1s. “Stay” is the first topper (and Hot Dance/Electronic Songs entry) for pop/R&B singer Cara.

Zedd previously topped Hot Dance/Electronic Songs for nine weeks as featured on Ariana Grande’s “Break Free” beginning in August 2014 and for six weeks with “I Want You to Know,” featuring Selena Gomez, starting in March 2015.

Boosted by 69-cent sale-pricing in the iTunes Store, “Stay” earns top Digital Gainer honors on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, surging by 135 percent to 91,000 downloads sold in the week ending April 20, according to Nielsen Music (also good for a 3-1 jump on Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales). The track likewise makes the biggest streaming gain, buoyed by the April 18 release of its official music video (18.7 million U.S. streams, up six percent). “Stay” also ascends in airplay, rising 16-13 on Radio Songs (66 million audience impressions, up 16 percent).

All that action pushes “Stay” into the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 (14-7), where it’s Zedd’s third top 10 and first in nearly three years (since “Break” hit No. 4). Cara also claims her third Hot 100 top 10.

DRAGON FLIES: Little Dragon debuts at No. 5 on Top/Dance Electronic Albums with Season High, selling 5,000 equivalent album units. Of those, 3,000 stem from traditional album sales, also granting the Swedish electronic outfit a No. 2 start on Dance/Electronic Album Sales. It’s the act’s third top five in as many tries on Top Dance/Electronic Albums, following Ritual Union (No. 4, 2011) and Nabuma Rubberband (No. 2, 2014).

IN A GOOD PLACE: Xenia Ghali grabs her second Dance Club Songs No. 1 with “Places,” featuring Raquel Castro(2-1). Greek DJ/producer Ghali first led last June with “Under These Lights,” while “Places” is the first Billboard No. 1 for singer/actress (and former contestant on NBC’s The Voice) Castro. Remixes from Casey Alva, D.O.D. and Glowinthedark, among others, helped Ghali and Castro secure their place at the top.

A grateful Ghali tells Billboard, “My second No. 1 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs Chart … how does someone react to that? I am so incredibly humbled and blessed. I want to thank each and every person who is supporting. ‘Places’ is a record that my team and I really believe in. A huge thank you goes out to them for working endless hours with me.”

Adds Ghali, “Raquel Castro, who sang the vocals on the record, was wonderful to work with and the music video gave me the opportunity to work with actor Ryan Kelley [MTV’s Teen Wolf], who is one of the most talented and genuine people I’ve met. Making the video, the first I’ve shot in New York City, was incredible, as I had the honor of working great people who share the same passion I have. To all of the Club DJs, thank you for making ‘Places’ the No. 1 dance club song in America!”
