Zayn Zooms to No. 1 on Billboard Artist 100 Chart

Zayn reigns, besting the No. 2 peak of his former group, One Direction.

Zayn takes over as the top musical act in the U.S., soaring 10-1 on the Billboard Artist 100 chart (dated April 16).

The Artist 100 measures artist activity across Billboard‘s most influential charts, including the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart, Top Album Sales and the Social 50. The Artist 100 blends data measuring album and track sales, radio airplay, streaming and social media fan interaction to provide a weekly multi-dimensional ranking of artist popularity.

Zayn rules the Artist 100 as his debut solo album Mind of Mine enters atop the Billboard 200 (157,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending March 31 in the U.S., according to Nielsen Music) and Top Album Sales (112,000 in pure album sales).

Zayn Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart With ‘Mind of Mine’

Zayn zips to the Artist 100 summit with a 169 surge in overall activity. Album sales mark the majority of his chart points (62 percent) — easily ahead of streaming, second at 16 percent.

Notably, Zayn bests the No. 2 Artist 100 peak of his former group, One Direction, which reached that rank both before and after his March 2015 departure from the act. 1D rose to the runner-up spot on both Dec. 6, 2014, and Dec. 5, 2015, when its albums Four and Made in the A.M. (its first without Zayn) debuted at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, on the Billboard 200 and Top Album Sales.

Rounding out the Artist 100’s top five, Justin Bieber drops 1-2 after 10 nonconsecutive weeks on top, the most among males dating to the chart’s July 2014 launch; Rihanna slips 2-3; Adele descends 3-4; and Twenty One Pilots rebound 7-5.
