Helping the song reach the summit? A 6-year-old in Dickson, Tennessee, named Loren Patterson.
On Oct. 29, Patterson, who was performing for the first time with the Dickson First Baptist Church children’s choir, started rocking out while her chorale was performing Williams’ song. After the service, Patterson’s parents posted the video on social media and the clip has so far drawn 50 million Facebook views and 750,000 shares.
While Facebook itself doesn’t contribute to the song’s chart ranking, the viral explosion surely helped spike interest in Williams’ “Choir,” which hikes by 77 percent to 4,000 downloads sold in the week ending Nov. 9, according to Nielsen Music, and jumps 4-1 on Christian Digital Song Sales.
“Choir” pushes 19-14 on Christian Streaming Songs (up 23 percent). Meanwhile, it rebounds 4-1 for a 13th week at No. 1 on Christian Airplay, gaining 3 percent to 10 million audience impressions.
“Choir” is the second entry and second No. 1 on Hot Christian Songs (and Christian Digital Song Sales) for Williams, who formerly fronted the rock band Zach Williams & The Reformation before beginning his solo Christian music career. His launch solo single “Chain Breaker” topped the Hot Christian Songs chart for nine weeks starting Nov. 19, 2016.
Since Hot Christian Songs, which blends streaming, airplay and sales data, became a multi-metric chart on Oct. 20, 2012, the only other artist to reign in his first two visits is Jordan Smith, the 2015 season nine winner of NBC’s The Voice. Smith went on to lead in his first three appearances (with “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” “Hallelujah” and “Mary Did You Know” in 2015-16).
The Other Side marks the fourth Top Gospel Albums appearance and second No. 1 for The Walls Group, which consists of four Houston-based siblings: sisters Rhea and Ahjah and brothers Darrel and Paco Walls.
The group first led with Fast Forward in 2014. The set followed its No. 29-peaking, self-titled debut effort in 2013. The act also reached No. 5 in 2014 with EP Love on the Radio.
“My Life,” the first single from The Other Side, bumps to new highs on Hot Gospel Songs (14-13) and Gospel Airplay (16-13).
DAVIS DEBUTS: Finally, the debut album from New Orleans singer/worship leader Isabel Davis, The Call, enters Top Gospel Albums at No. 3 with 2,000 units. The title-song first single reached No. 8 on Hot Gospel Songs in June.
“Screaming God you’re so faithful!!!,” David beamed Nov. 14. “So, this is that moment when you think you’re about to do a promo video, but find out your debut CD is No. 3 on the gospel charts.” (In a Nov. 16 visit to Billboard‘s New York offices, Davis made sure to snap a photo of herself in front of the chart for further proof.)
