Brooklyn rapper Young M.A. earns her first top 10 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, as “OOOUUU” hops 12-8 on the Oct. 22-dated chart. The jump marks the first time that a female emcee has reached the top 10 on the chart this year, as a lead act.
Missy Elliott was the most recent female rapper to reach the top 10 as a lead, with “WTF (Where They From),” featuring Pharrell Williams, when it peaked at No. 8 on the Dec. 5, 2015, chart. The only one to do so in 2016, but in a featured role, was Nicki Minaj, for her participation as a featured artist on a remix of Yo Gotti’s “Down in the DM.” The song reached No. 3 on the March 12 chart.
Young M.A.’s chart lift is aided by gains across each metric that contributes to the list: airplay, digital sales and streaming.
The biggest jump comes from sales, with a 38 percent increase to 15,000 downloads in the week ending Oct. 6 (according to Nielsen Music). It’s the best sales week for the track so far, and triggers a 9-5 climb over on the Rap Digital Songs chart – where it reaches a new peak. A new remix featuring 50 Cent, released on Sept. 30 contributes over 1,000 digital sales to its total.
Streaming also reaches a new high, swelling to 10.1 million weekly U.S. clicks (a 21 percent increase). Most plays come from YouTube, with 45 percent of overall streams. Young M.A. released the music video for the song in May, and it has collected over 39 million views to date.
At radio, “OOOUUU” reaches new peaks on the Rap Airplay chart, where it hikes into the top 10 for the first time (12-10). In the week ending Oct. 9, audience impressions were up 11 percent, to 14.8 million. Among the top contributing stations were WHXT, Columbia, South Carolina and WQHT, New York.
Elsewhere, Young M.A. arrives at No. 86 over on the Billboard Artist 100 chart, which measures artist popularity across all genres by blending album sales, track sales, radio airplay, streaming and social media data.
On the all-genre Billboard Hot 100, “OOOUUU” lifts 36-29.
