The Year in Charts 2016: Republic Rules as Top Label for Second Straight Year

For the second straight year, Republic Records finishes 2016 as the top label on Billboard's year-end charts.

For the second straight year, Republic Records is the top label on Billboard’s year-end charts.

The top labels of 2016 are determined by blending cumulative performance on the Billboard 200 albums chart and Billboard Hot 100 songs chart, through the eligibility year (charts dated Dec. 5, 2015 through Nov. 26, 2016). Data registered before or after a title’s chart run are not considered in these standings.

Republic Records co-founder and CEO Monte Lipman says in a statement to Billboard, “This achievement acknowledges an extraordinary roster of artists, executive talent, and strategic partners. The continued pursuit of excellence on behalf of the music, has always been the foundation of our success.”

Republic’s No. 1 rank was supported by the success of such albums as Drake’s Views (released on Young Money/Cash Money/Republic), which spent 13 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, the continuing strong performance of The Weeknd’s Beauty Behind the Madness (XO/Republic), Drake and Future’s No. 1 What a Time to Be Alive (A-1/Freebandz/Young Money/Cash Money/Epic/Republic), Ariana Grande’s Dangerous Woman (Republic) and James Bay’s Chaos and the Calm (Republic).

Over on the Hot 100, songs such as Drake’s “One Dance” (which spent 10 weeks at No. 1), DNCE’s “Cake by the Ocean,” Ariana Grande’s “Into You,” along with Mike Posner’s “I Took a Pill in Ibiza” and Shawn Mendes’ “Stitches” (both released on Island Records, but promoted to radio through Republic) supported Republic’s overall top label triumph.

Republic also finishes 2016 atop a bevy of other year-end charts, including: Top Hot 100 Label, Top Radio Songs Label, Top Streaming Songs Label, Top Mainstream Top 40/Pop Songs Label, Top Adult Top 40/Adult Pop Songs Label, Top R&B/Hip-Hop Label, Top Rhythmic Songs Label and Top Hot Rap Songs Label.
