Wiz Khalifa’s ‘See You Again’ Tops Hot 100 for Second Week

Lights, camera, action! As we do each Wednesday, let’s roll through the songs in the top 10, and a bit beyond, on the sales/airplay/streaming-based Hot 100 (dated May 2).
“Again,” released on Atlantic Records and promoted to radio by Roadrunner Promotions, logs a third week at No. 1 on the Digital Songs chart despite a 19 percent drop to a still-hefty 375,000 downloads sold in the week ending April 19, according to Nielsen Music. The sum is the seventh-best for a song this year; its total of 464,000 the week before is the year’s top weekly total, powered heavily by the April 6 premiere of the song’s official video. It additionally passes 1 million downloads sold to-date.
“Again” notches a second week at No. 1 on both Streaming Songs (24.6 million U.S. streams, down 1 percent) and the subscription services-based On-Demand Songs chart (8.7 million, up 14 percent). Airplay is quickly catching up: “Again” vaults 49-18 in its second week on Radio Songs with a 104 percent surge to 48 million all-format impressions, granting the song top Airplay Gainer honors on the Hot 100.
“Again” concurrently rules Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts for a second week each.
Continuing to help fuel the song’s success: Furious 7 keeps dominating at the box office, having now passed a staggering $1.1 billion in worldwide receipts since its April 3 opening, according to Box Office Mojo.
“Again” tops the Hot 100 with roughly the same points difference (1.5-to-1) as last week over runner-up for a second week “Uptown Funk!,” by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars (with both songs down 8 percent in overall activity). “Funk” dropped 1-2 last week after leading for 14 weeks, tying for the second-longest command in the Hot 100’s 56-year history. (The record for longest reign still belongs to Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s “One Sweet Day”: 16 weeks at No. 1 in 1995-96.)
“Funk” slips 1-3 on Radio Songs after 12 weeks at No. 1 (143 million, down 9 percent). It dips 2-3 on Digital Songs (128,000, down 12 percent) and keeps at No. 3 on Streaming Songs (14 million, down 4 percent).
Notably, just two songs have ascended to No. 1 on the Hot 100 in 2015, tying the lowest rate of turnover atop the tally through a year’s first chart dated in May. Two No. 1s had also risen to the summit in that span in 1996: following “One Sweet Day,” which reached No. 1 on Dec. 2, 1995, Celine Dion’s “Because You Loved Me” began a six-week lead (March 23, 1996) and Carey’s follow-up, “Always Be My Baby,” ruled the charts dated May 4 and 11, 1996.

Below the top two on the Hot 100, The Weeknd’s “Earned It (Fifty Shades of Grey)” reaches a new peak, jumping 6-3 and adding top Streaming Gainer kudos. The soundtrack single zips 9-4 on Streaming Songs with a 65 percent increase to 10.3 million, surely aided in part by momentum gained following his buzzy, show-closing April 11 set at Coachella.
On Radio Songs, “Earned” pushes 5-4 with a 15 percent gain to 142 million. The song holds at No. 6 on Digital Songs (107,000, down 8 percent). It leads the Hot R&B Songs chart for a fourth week.
Maroon 5’s No. 2-peaking “Sugar” descends 3-4 on the Hot 100 and Fetty Wap’s “Trap Queen” retreats from its No. 4 high to No. 5, although it makes across-the-board gains. It stays at No. 2 on Streaming Songs (16.6 million, up 4 percent), bounds 7-4 on Digital Songs (114,000, up 1 percent) and grows 17-14 on Radio Songs (56 million, 15 percent).
In addition to The Weeknd’s hit, Ellie Goulding’s fellow Fifty Shades of Grey single “Love Me Like You Do” rebounds 7-6 on the Hot 100 after peaking at No. 3 and checks off a new milestone: “Love” is now the most-heard song in the country, rising 3-1 on Radio Songs with a 2 percent gain to 145 million in audience. As previously reported, the tune also reaches No. 1 on the Pop Songs airplay chart. “My song is number 1 at radio here in the U.S and I can’t help but be so elated about it,” she tweeted. “It’s pretty damn special what we’ve done!”
Goulding celebrates her second Radio Songs leader: her debut hit “Lights” led for five weeks in 2012 (and peaked at No. 2 on the Hot 100).
Rounding out the Hot 100’s top 10, Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” descends 5-7 after peaking at No. 2 for eight weeks. It tops Adult Contemporary for a seventh week; Walk the Moon’s “Shut Up and Dance” lifts 9-8 on the Hot 100 and leads Hot Rock Songs for a fourth week; Flo Rida’s “G.D.F.R.,” featuring Sage the Gemini and Lookas, falls from its No. 8 Hot 100 peak to No. 9; and Natalie La Rose’s “Somebody,” featuring Jeremih, returns to its highpoint, and the Hot 100’s top 10, rebounding 11-10.
