The Weeknd is the top musical act in the U.S., rebounding to No. 1 on the Billboard Artist 100 chart (dated Oct. 31). Meanwhile, Selena Gomez roars to her highest rank, No. 2, after more than a year on the chart.
The Artist 100 measures artist activity across Billboard‘s most influential charts, including the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart, Top Album Sales and the Social 50. The Artist 100 blends data measuring album and track sales, radio airplay, streaming and social media fan interaction to provide a weekly multi-dimensional ranking of artist popularity.
The Weeknd rises 2-1 for an eighth nonconsecutive week atop the Artist 100 (second only to Taylor Swift‘s record 31 frames at the summit), up by 14 percent in overall activity. He makes his greatest gain in digital song sales (49 percent), as his Hot 100-leading “The Hills” bounds by 93 percent in sales (to 189,000, according to Nielsen Music), powered by new remixes with Eminem and Nicki Minaj. The track tops the Hot 100 for a fifth week.
Just below, Gomez vaults 9-2 to reach a new peak in her 55th week on the Artist 100. As her new set Revival launches at No. 1 on Top Album Sales (85,000), she soars by 182 percent in overall metrics, with album sales contributing 65 percent of her Artist 100 points total. On the Hot 100, the first two singles from Revival place in the top 20: “Good for You,” featuring A$AP Rocky, holds at No. 10 after reaching No. 5, and “Same Old Love” skyrockets 38-18 (a new peak).
Rounding out the Artist 100’s top five, Drake dips 1-3 after five nonconsecutive weeks on top; Swift slips 3-4; and The Game re-enters at a new high of No. 5 as his new The Documentary 2 debuts at No. 1 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Rap Albums (83,000 sold).
Among acts making notable debuts on the Artist 100 this week, also driven primarily by sales of newly-charting albums: country stars Jana Kramer (No. 22) and Toby Keith (No. 38), as well as rock acts Mayday Parade (No. 46) and City and Colour (No. 68).
