Welcome back to Billboard‘s weekly video show “Real-Time Rewind,” which recaps the past week’s hottest action on the Billboard Real-Time Twitter Charts — Trending 140 and Emerging Artists — and the news that’s driving the action. Shira Karsen hits the studio for episode 64, which delves into the latest hits from The Weeknd, Nick Jonas, Becky G & Justin Bieber!
So what happened on the Real-Time Charts this week?
The Weeknd Makes ‘Friends’: After a riveting set at the Billboard Hot 100 Fest, headliner The Weeknd dropped a music video for his new song “Tell Your Friends.” Listeners got a sneak peek of the track thanks to an Instagram post by Travi$ Scott, but the full version (produced by Kanye West) and its moody video flew the song to No. 1 on the Trending 140. “Friends” follows the R&B star’s other smash summer cuts, “The Hills” and “Can’t Feel My Face.” All three tracks are featured on his sophomore album, Beauty Behind the Madness, due out Aug. 28.
Jonas ‘Levels’ Up: Newly minted solo star Nick Jonas returns with “Levels” this week, which held onto the No. 1 spot on the Trending 140 for more than two hours. The track continues the momentum he started in 2014 with his second solo album, which boasted the hit singles “Jealous” and “Chains.” Jonas will premiere the song’s music video on Aug. 30, the same day he will offer the first “Levels” live performance at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards.
Becky G Is Back: “Becky G returns with a new dance-pop track, “Break a Sweat” The tune took to No. 1 on the Trending 140, her third chart-topper after “Shower” and “Can’t Stop Dancin’.” Becky scored extra social media backing with supportive tweets from Jake Miller and recent ex-boyfriend Austin Mahone. All three of Becky’s chart-topping singles could be featured on the social media star’s upcoming debut album, but no word yet on any announced full-lengths. Her last official set was her debut EP, 2013’s Play It Again.
Bieber’s Countdown Continues: Another superstar act, Justin Bieber, also heads into a big week following his set at the Hot 100 Festival. The Canadian sensation is in the homestretch of his “What Do You Mean?” countdown, which enlisted an extensive number of celebrity pals for a thirty day lead-up to the new single’s release. The track debuted the morning of Aug. 28, and Bieber is expected to debut the cut at the MTV Video Music Awards. The song previews the hitmaker’s new album, his first studio set since 2012’s Believe.
The Trending 140 chart measures the acceleration of conversation around artists and their music, while the Emerging Artists chart measures the volume of tweets around new artists and their songs.
