Newly formed C-pop group WayV is already making waves on Billboard’s Social 50 chart, debuting at No. 4 on the Jan. 26-dated tally.
The seven-piece boyband, a Chinese affiliate of K-pop’s NCT, was introduced in August 2018 under the working name NCT China. On New Year’s Eve 2018, the name WayV was revealed, followed by its debut EP, The Vision, on Jan. 17 (led by a Mandarin-language version of NCT 127’s “Regular”).
WayV added 40,000 new followers to its Twitter account amid the release, alongside 93,000 mentions and 784,000 retweets on the service, according to Next Big Sound.
In addition to its Social 50 debut, the act reaches Emerging Artists (No. 16), and three of its songs dot World Digital Song Sales, led by the No. 3 bow of “Regular” (1,000 downloads, according to Nielsen Music).
WayV snags the top debut on the Social 50 since XXXTentacion started at No. 2 on the ranking dated June 30, 2018 following his June 18 death.
The Social 50 is powered by data tracked by music analytics company Next Big Sound and ranks the most popular artists on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Wikipedia and Tumblr. The chart’s methodology blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers with artist page views and engagement. The chart’s latest tracking week ended Jan. 17.
