Waka Flocka Flame Lights Up Social 50 Chart After Announcing Presidential Run

Waka Flocka Flame fires up a debut on the Social 50 chart after he announced he was running for president.

Just eight days after Hillary Clinton announced she was running for president on April 12, a far more unlikely candidate decided to enter the race: rapper Waka Flocka Flame. In a video uploaded to Rolling Stone’s YouTube channel, the Atlanta rapper celebrated every pot smoker’s favorite holiday (April 20) by announcing that he’s running for president. The ensuing buzz spurs his re-entry at No. 27 on the Social 50 chart dated May 9, his highest rank.

The Social 50 ranks the most popular artists on YouTube, Vevo, Facebook, Twitter, SoundCloud, Wikipedia, MySpace and Instagram. The chart’s methodology blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with artist page views, song plays and reactions as measured by music analytics company Next Big Sound.

The first item on Flocka’s agenda, according to the video that has since racked up more than 1.4 million global views through April 29, would be to legalize marijuana. This rather entertaining piece of faux news caused quite the stir online, making headlines and bringing him more than 125,000 new fans across Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Traffic to his Wikipedia page increased by 1,636 percent as well in the week ending April 26 (according to Next Big Sound).

Farther up the chart, Zendaya is the week’s top re-entry at No. 23 (her highest position since March 14-dated chart, when she was No. 13) thanks to buzz generated by her hosting the Radio Disney Music Awards on April 26. Among her gains: she earned a 288 percent growth in mentions on Twitter.
