Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift Rule Trending 140 During 2015 MTV Video Music Awards

Justin Bieber's "What Do You Mean?" performance helped him score the night's most shared track on Twitter, while Taylor Swift's "Wildest Dreams" came in a close second.

Though Justin Bieber didn’t scoop any awards up during the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards (Aug. 30), the pop superstar was unquestionably the night’s biggest winner on Twitter.

Bieber’s debut performance of his new single “What Do You Mean?” launched the Canadian star to No. 1 on the real-time Billboard + Twitter Trending 140 during the telecast, and the track held the position throughout the night. In his first awards show performance in over two years, Bieber delivered a tightly choreographed, energetic mashup of “What Do You Mean?” with “Where Are U Now,” his hit collaboration with Skrillex and Diplo, and the singer broke down in tears at the set’s conclusion while fans cheered wildly for him.

Immediately after the broadcast, Bieber dropped the music video for “What Do You Mean?” granting the cut additional time as the most shared track on Twitter.

Just beneath Bieber, Taylor Swift’s “Wildest Dreams” settled into a lengthy run at No. 2 on the Trending 140 following a brief stint as the top song earlier in the evening. Swift’s “Dreams” rose as the superstar unveiled the song’s music video on MTV moments before the broadcast began.

Swift’s Trending 140 success was part of a successful night for the pop star: she scooped up four Moonmen this year, taking two honors (Video of the Year and Best Collaboration) for the celebrity-filled “Bad Blood” clip, while the video to “Blank Space” nabbed Best Female Video and Best Pop Video.

Other notable moves on the Trending 140 from the 2015 VMAs included Nick Jonas’ “Levels,” which rose into the top three after the solo star performed the track live for the first time, and Demi Lovato’s “Cool for the Summer,” which climbed into the top five following Lovato’s first-ever VMAs performance.
