Video Auto-Editing App Magisto Partners with Jerry Garcia Estate to Collect Fan-Made Tributes

The technology takes personal photos and videos and edits them to music and visuals.

Bay Area-based auto-editing video app Magisto is getting into the Grateful Dead groove, introducing a Jerry Garcia theme for its 65 million users with the blessing of the Jerry Garcia estate. Magisto takes personal photos and videos and edits them to music and visuals that double as Dead-themed tributes to Jerry. The fan-generated clips can then be entered in a contest where the Garcia estate will pick a favorite to be featured on www.jerrygarcia.com.


Says Garcia’s daughter Trixie of the submissions so far: “They’re really sweet. I’ve done a couple movies myself, just out of my pictures from the [Santa Clara] shows to get an idea of what the app actually does and it really does turn a couple snapshots into a nice vignette.”

The videos are accompanied by original Garcia music from the just-released Jerry Garcia Band On Broadway 3-CD set.

Red Light Management negotiated use of Jerry Garcia’s image and music for Magisto, and his daughter says the estate is more nimble than one would expect. “We’re actually a lot more flexible than the Grateful Dead is as an entity because we’ve worked out a pretty streamlined approval process,” says Trixie. Two things that matter when partnering with the Garcia estate: that the business is “in the vibe” and that the deadheads don’t get upset. “We have a very picky fan base that takes things personally and the last thing I ever want to do is upset them with doing something that is disrespectful.” 

It’s why the video tribute makes sense, adds Trixie, who will judge the Magisto clips following the July 3 -5 Chicago Fare Thee Well shows. A couple pointers: “Shoot lots of people dancing and smiling faces.”
