Twenty One Pilots Tie for Most Consecutive Rock Airplay Top 10s With ‘The Hype’

The duo now has nine straight top 10s.

Twenty one pilots join Shinedown as the only acts to link nine consecutive top 10s on Billboard‘s Rock Airplay chart.

“The Hype,” from the duo’s 2018 album Trench, jumps 12-10 on the Rock Airplay tally dated Sept. 14, up 6% to 5.5 million in audience, according to Nielsen Music.

Each of twenty one pilots’ singles to reach Rock Airplay has hit the top 10 dating to “Tear in My Heart,” which peaked at No. 2 in July 2015. Along the way, three have reached No. 1: “Stressed Out” (seven weeks beginning in December 2015), “Heathens” (nine, beginning in September 2016) and “Jumpsuit” (two, in August 2018).


Shinedown scored nine straight top 10s from “Sound of Madness” (No. 2, July 2009) through “I’ll Follow You” (No. 8, June 2013).

Shinedown also holds the Rock Airplay record for the most total top 10s (dating to the chart’s 2009 launch), having racked up its 12th and latest with the No. 7-peaking “Monsters” in July. Twenty one pilots’ streak of nine encompasses all their top 10s.

“The Hype” concurrently rises 9-8 on the Alternative Songs airplay chart, where it’s the duo’s 11th top 10, a run that began with the No. 10 hit “Holding On to You” in June 2013.

Twenty one pilots’ latest hit is the fourth single from Trench, which debuted at No. 1 on Top Rock Albums and No. 2 on the Billboard 200 dated Oct. 20, 2018, with 175,000 equivalent album units earned in its first week. It’s accrued 811,000 units to date.
