Trisha Yearwood on New Album ‘Every Girl,’ Being Competitive With Garth Brooks & ‘The Freedom That Comes With Time’

Yearwood and Pearl/Gwendolyn Records gm Lesly Simon chat about the state of country and more.

Trisha Yearwood‘s new album, Every Girl, arrived Aug. 30 and is set to launch on next week’s Billboard charts, dated Sept. 14.

Perhaps surprisingly, the set is her first proper album of all-new country material since 2007’s Heaven, Heartache and the Power of Love, which arrived and peaked at No. 10 on Top Country Albums.

The lead single from Every Girl, de facto title track “Every Girl in This Town,” debuted at its No. 21 high on Billboard‘s Country Airplay chart in June (marking Yearwood’s best-ever bow) has ranked in the tally’s top 40 each week since.

Still, it’s not like she’s been resting over the last dozen years, at all. Yearwood and her superstar husband, Garth Brooks, released the holiday set Christmas Together, which debuted at No. 1 on Top Country Albums in December 2016, and she’s been performing with Brooks on his extensive touring schedule since 2014.


Meanwhile, earlier this year, Yearwood, renowned for her pure and powerful vocals, delivered a tribute album to Frank Sinatra, one of her musical heroes. The set, Let’s Be Frank, hit No. 2 on Billboard‘s Jazz Albums chart.

With a new country album in hand, Yearwood is embarking on her headlining Every Girl Tour, which launches with three dates with the Nashville Symphony (Oct. 3-5) and wraps in Naples, Florida, on Dec. 8, with 22 cities announced so far.

Beginning with her debut hit, “She’s in Love With the Boy,” which topped Hot Country Songs for two weeks in 1991, Yearwood has rolled up five No. 1s among 19 top 10s. On Top Country Albums, she boasts four leaders among 14 top 10s.

As Yearwood embarks on her latest flurry of activity, she sat down in Nashville on the Billboard Chart Beat Podcast with Pearl and Gwendolyn Records general manager Lesly Simon and Billboard senior chart manager Jim Asker to discuss new the album, how competitive she is or isn’t with Brooks (she is) and the continued scarcity of women on the charts, including veteran female artists.

“You lose your filter … that’s not so good,” Yearwood says, with a laugh, about her current mindset at this point in her life and career. “But you also lose your inhibitions. There’s a freedom that comes with time that allows you to just have fun.

“When I listen to this record back, I don’t have one regret. I don’t have any song I would’ve done differently. Whatever happens with it [commercially], I’m good, because I’m so happy with the way it came out.

“That’s a freedom that comes with taking all the pressure off yourself.”
