TobyMac lands the second-highest debut of his career on Billboard‘s Hot Christian Songs chart, which is powered by streaming, airplay and sales data, as “21 Years” arrives at No. 3 on the list dated Jan. 25.
“21 Years” sold 10,000 downloads in its first week, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data. It launches at No. 1 on Christian Digital Song Sales, marking TobyMac’s fifth leader and third No. 1 arrival.
It also attracted 2.1 million U.S. streams in the tracking week and begins at No. 10 on Christian Streaming Songs, becoming TobyMac’s fourth top 10.
On Christian Airplay, “21 Years” ranks at No. 33 in its second week on the tally, up by 7% to 500,000 audience. Concurrently, TobyMac’s proper current radio single, “Edge of My Seat,” featuring Cochren & Co., lifts 13-12 (5.7 million, up 18%).
“21 Years,” which Toby McKeehan (TobyMac’s actual name) wrote with Bryan Fowler and Blake NeeSmith, is a tribute to his late firstborn son, Truett McKeehan. The 21-year-old musician passed away suddenly at the McKeehan family’s Tennessee home last October, just a week after his first solo show, which his father had attended.
On Hot Christian Songs, “21 Years” becomes TobyMac’s second-highest starter, after “I Just Need U.,” which became his sixth and most recent No. 1 when it entered atop the Jan. 20, 2018-dated chart.
“21 Years” is TobyMac’s 22nd Hot Christian Songs top 10, a run that started with his third entry, “Burn for You,” which reached No. 10 in November 2005. He ties Jeremy Camp for fourth place among acts with the most top 10s in the history of the chart (which began in 2003); Casting Crowns, MercyMe and Chris Tomlin share the record with 27 top 10s each.
