Tink & Timbaland Cover Aaliyah’s ‘One in a Million’

The singer, with the help of producer Timbaland, updates Timbaland's 1996 classic track with Aaliyah.

Call it a passing of the torch: Timbaland’s new R&B sensation, Tink, leaves her mark on “One in a Million,” one of the producer’s breakthrough tracks from his late ’90s partnership with Aaliyah. Upon its release, the track leapt to No. 1 on the real-time Billboard + Twitter Trending 140. According to Tink’s Twitter, the remix will be serviced to iTunes on Monday (May 11).

Tink revealed her version of the tune, simply called “Million,” on Twitter on May 8. The track kicks off with Aaliyah singing the chorus before Tink jumps on to lace smooth raps above an updated Timbaland beat. In refashioning “Million,” the pair tackles one of Aaliyah’s most enduring hits. The original, released in 1996, led the Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart for eight weeks in 1996-1997, Aaliyah’s longest stretch at the top.

It’s no surprise Tink and Timbaland linked up to honor Aaliyah. During his set at SXSW in March, the hit-making producer told the crowd that Aaliyah appeared in a dream to endorse Tink as “the one.” In addition, Timbaland said in a 2014 interview with Power 105.1 FM’s Breakfast Club that Tink’s album is the best project he’s crafted since Aaliyah’s One in a Million. That album, released in 1996, climbed to No. 2 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and spun off two top 10 singles on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart, “If Your Girl Only Knew” (No. 1, two weeks) and “The One I Gave My Heart To” (No. 8).
