Artist, producer, songwriter and fashion-world fixture Theophilus London has signed a publishing deal with Downtown, Billboard has learned. The deal, which covers his back catalog of two albums, two EPs and a handful of mixtapes, is apparently his first-ever publishing agreement.
London is perhaps best known as a collaborator of Kanye West, who executive-produced London’s most recent album, 2014’s Vibes, which came out via Warner Bros. Records. West was featured on the album’s “Can’t Stop,” and the two also worked together on West’s “All Day,” a non-album single that also featured Allan Kingdom and Paul McCartney, and was nominated for a pair of Grammys. In addition to West, London has worked with Jesse Boykins III, Dev Hynes, Leon Ware, Tame Impala and Solange, among others.
“Theophilus is a true artist,” said senior vp A&R Andrew Gould, who brought London to Downtown as his first signee since joining the company, in a statement. “I’ve always loved his music and admired how his incredible talents push culture forward. He exemplifies the type of creative with whom we strive to partner here at Downtown. I look forward to a long and rewarding relationship with Theo and the indie-pop team.”
London is signed to the label independently popular. and has a management deal with indie-pop. After an extended break from the music scene, he returned with a new mixtape, Nights B4 Bebey, this past July. A new album and a collab project with Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker are forthcoming.
“When my partner Carlo [Fox] and I were chatting about the rollout for Theo’s new project, we knew that the best way to maximize our efforts was to have a great publishing partner,” indie-pop’s Ben Willis said in a statement. “The first company that came to mind was Downtown — someone that was more boutique, but also had a great roster of tastemaker artists. And since our good friend Andrew Gould just took the helm there, we knew he would see the vision — and he did. We couldn’t be happier to have Theophilus as a part of their family.”
