The Who Announce 2019 North American Moving On! Tour, First Studio Album in 13 Years

The legendary rockers will hit 29 cities on the tour, which will feature symphonic accompaniment, with an album due out later this year.

The Who are headed back to North America. The iconic rockers will hit stages in the U.S. and Canada beginning on May 7 with a gig at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan, for a Live Nation-promoted tour that will be accompanied by the duo’s first new album in 13 years. Singer Roger Daltrey and guitarist Pete Townshend will be joined by guitarist/singer Simon Townshend, keyboardist Loren Gold, bassist Jon Button and drummer Zak Starkey (son of the Beatles’ Ringo Starr), on the Moving On! tour, which a statement released on Monday (Jan. 14) noted will also feature “symphonic accompaniment” on each stop.

No additional details were available at press time about the album, the follow-up to 2006’s Endless Wire. “The Who are touring again in 2019. Roger christened this tour Moving On! I love it. It is what both of us want to do,” Townshend, 73, said in a statement. “Move on, with new music, classic Who music, all performed in new and exciting ways. Taking risks, nothing to lose. Looking forward to seeing you all. Are you ready?”

The tour marks the group’s return to the U.S. following a 2017 Las Vegas residency, with fan club presale beginning on Wednesday (Jan. 16) at 10 a.m. local time through Jan. 17 at 10 p.m. local time. Each pair of tickets purchased online will include a code for a CD copy of the album — whose title has not yet been announced. The offer is good only for fans in the U.S. and Canada and does not apply to tickets purchased through re-sellers; $1 from each tickets for the tour will benefit Teen Cancer America.

“Be aware Who fans! Just because it’s The Who with an orchestra, in no way will it compromise the way Pete and I deliver our music,” Daltrey, 74, said in a statement. “This will be full throttle Who with horns and bells on.” Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday (Jan. 18) here. The group announced the opening acts for the tour on Monday (April 29), revealing that Dirty Honey, Reignwolf, the Arkells, Peter Wolf, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, Leslie Mendelson, The HillBenders and MOON VS Sun will open up the summer dates.
