Your move, Drake. The Weeknd is the latest celebrity to buy into the gaming industry as a new co-owner of Canadian esports franchise OverActive Media, the parent company of the Overwatch League’s Toronto Defiant and Splyce.
The partnership makes The Weeknd — a.k.a. Abel Tesfaye — the first-ever Toronto Defiant and Splyce global ambassador, with plans to partake in OAM’s brand and content building efforts in Canada and beyond.
“As a big esports fan, I am really excited to be involved in this project,” The Weeknd said in a statement. “I am looking forward to collaborating with OverActive Media in unique and innovative ways.”
Back in October, avid gamer Drake invested in esports company 100 Thieves along with Scooter Braun. And he’s not the only artist who sees potential in marrying music and video games — Marshmello attracted millions of viewers to a virtual concert he held within online game Fortnite in February, the same month Weezer teamed up with the game to premiere The Black Album.
OAM owns teams in the League of Legends European Championship, Overwatch League, Call of Duty World League, Rocket League, Starcraft and Smite. It’s also one of just five organizations in the world with permanent slots in both League of Legends and the Overwatch League.
