After two decades as a band, The Strokes have their first Billboard radio chart No. 1.
“Bad Decisions,” the New York City rockers’ latest single, rises 2-1 on the Adult Alternative Songs airplay survey dated May 2.
The Strokes’ previous best peak on a Billboard airplay chart belonged to “Last Nite,” which hit No. 5 on Alternative Songs in February 2002.
“Bad Decisions” is The Strokes’ first entry on Adult Alternative Songs; in a history at radio that began with “Last Nite,” the band has mostly been a mainstay at the alternative format during its career. Still, “Bad Decisions” jumps 18-16 on Alternative Songs, the band’s top rank since “Under Cover of Darkness” reached No. 12 in April 2011.
On the all-rock-format Rock Airplay tally, “Bad Decisions” rises 17-16 with 3 million audience impressions, up 5%, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data.
While “Bad Decisions” is the band’s first airplay chart No. 1, it’s not the act’s first No. 1 song. That distinction goes to “Juicebox,” which crowned the since-shuttered Hot Singles Sales chart in 2005. Another release, “Oblivius,” in 2016, also led that list, which ranked top-selling singles released in physical formats, such as CD or cassette.
“Bad Decisions” is the lead single from The New Abnormal, The Strokes’ first full-length since 2013’s Comedown Machine. The set debuted at No. 1 on Top Rock Albums and No. 8 on the all-genre Billboard 200 a week ago (on charts dated April 25) with 35,000 equivalent album units earned in its release week.
