Chart Beat Podcast: Meet the Beatles’ Renowned Collector Dave Morrell, Plus Fab Music by the Well Pennies

A flashback to April 4, 1964, when The Beatles set a Hot 100 record by monopolizing the entire top five. Morrell shares stories & folk-pop duo the Well Pennies perform.

Welcome to the Billboard Chart Beat Podcast, where each week co-hosts Gary Trust and Trevor Anderson, from the Billboard charts department, discuss why what’s on the charts … is on the charts, while also looking at current chart action in a historical context for even greater insights.

This week, we celebrate The Beatles, who made Billboard Hot 100 history on April 4, 1964, by charting the entire top five, a feat still unmatched by any other act 54 years later. Leading the list that week: “Can’t Buy Me Love,” which blasted 27-1 (the chart’s biggest vault to No. 1 until 2002).

Two guests join the podcast, led by folk-pop duo The Well Pennies, who perform their cover of The Beatles’ classic “All My Loving,” as well as original song “Ooh La La.”

Plus, renowned Beatles collector and Capitol Records vet Dave Morrell chats about his one-of-a-kind memories of the group over the years, from discovering “I Want to Hold Your Hand” to forming a close relationship with John Lennon (as well as how he acquired one of the rarest items of all Beatles memorabilia: a “butcher cover” copy of the Yesterday and Today album).

“When I got into the record business, I worked with everybody from Aerosmith to Zappa,” Morrell muses. “I spent 40 years in New York City being a promotion man. I’ll tell you, nobody was as nice as The Beatles, none of them. Ego-wise, caring about others, taking their time … never a problem to ask any of them any question in the world.”
