Not only did The 1975 earn its first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart with I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It, but the band also claims a fun piece of chart history. With 71 characters (including spaces), it’s the longest-ever album title at No. 1.
That beats the previous record of 59 characters, by LL Cool J’s G.O.A.T. Featuring James T. Smith: The Greatest of All Time and the various artists compilation P. Diddy & Bad Boy Present… We Invented the Remix.
The 1975 Earns First No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart
Notably, The 1975’s title lacks a colon or ellipsis, which are often used to help extend a title with additional descriptive words. For example, Garth Brooks’ Blame It All On My Roots: Five Decade of Influences (52 characters) or The Hunger Games: Songs From District 12 and Beyond (51).
After The 1975, the next-longest title without a colon or ellipsis is Limp Bizkit’s 49-character long Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water.
The 1975’s Matt Healy: ‘I’ve Never Let Anything Stop Me From Getting Where I’m Going’
The Billboard 200 albums chart began publishing on a regular, weekly basis on March 24, 1956.
While we’re discussing long titles at No. 1… what about the shortest titles that have topped the list?
There’s a six-way tie for the briefest title, with just one character each: The Beatles’ 1, Beyonce’s 4, Foreigner’s 4, Maroon 5’s V, Omarion’s O and Ed Sheeran’s x. (A case could be made for Nas’ untitled 2008 No. 1 set as having zero characters, but the album was listed on the chart as Untitled.)
