It’s official: Taylor Swift has a new song on the way. After teasing fans with a few mysterious snake videos on social media, the “Shake It Off” singer announced Wednesday (Aug. 23) that she’ll be releasing the first single from her forthcoming album Reputation (due Nov. 10) on Thursday night (Aug. 24).
Swifties have been eagerly awaiting new T-Swift music for some time — she was coming up on three years since 2014’s 1989 — but the timing of her first new release makes for quite the interesting situation. It’s easy to assume that Swift’s song will debut relatively high on the Sept. 16-dated Billboard Hot 100 chart considering the hype surrounding the new music, potentially even taking over the top spot. While that’s awesome for Swift, it’s not-so-awesome for Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber.
Fonsi and Yankee’s duet “Despacito” (featuring Bieber) has held the No. 1 spot on the Hot 100 for 15 weeks straight, one week away from tying the all-time record for longest streak at No. 1 (currently held by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men‘s 1995-96 smash “One Sweet Day”). The song could potentially still break that record with a 17th week — but with Swift coming out of the gates this week, there’s a chance that record may remain unbroken.
As many artists told Billboard at the Hot 100 Fest, “Despacito” is the quintessential song of the summer. At the same time, Swift fans are more than ecstatic for her first post-1989 (solo) single, so it’s definitely possible that the current song-of-summer gets dethroned. But you tell us: Do you think Swift will reach No. 1 in the first week or two of her new single being out? Or will “Despacito” break that 11-year old record?
