Talib Kweli, Soul Rebels Announce Joint West Coast Tour: Exclusive

After a successful East Coast run earlier this year, the Soul Rebels announce a new West Coast run with Talib Kweli that will kick off this September.

New Orleans-bred brass band the Soul Rebels have been blending jazz, funk and soul for more than two decades now, and for the better part of the past year, they’ve been incorporating more and more hip-hop into that brew. Following up on a successful East Coast tour backing Talib Kweli this February, the band is collaborating with Kweli again for a two-week, eight date run through the West Coast this fall, from Sept. 22 at Humboldt State University in Arcata, Calif. through an Oct. 2 date in Santa Barbara.

The eight-piece band has been broadening its hip-hop chops by linking up with a slew of collaborations with New York rappers of late, backing Joey Bada$$ on a number of dates and hosting a three-night run at NYC’s Brooklyn Bowl in February that featured surprise appearances from Kweli, Joey, Rakim, Buckshot, Smif-N-Wessun, Big Freedia and Kirk Knight (Prodigy from Mobb Deep, Torae, Skyzoo and Slick Rick have also sat in on recent dates).

Videos from those performances — which took place Feb 25-27 — featuring songs like Kweli’s “Get By,” Eric B. and Rakim’s “Paid In Full” and “Don’t Sweat the Technique” and more can be found below (for all 10 performances, click here).

Ahead of the tour, the Soul Rebels also have two more special performances lined up. As previously announced, the group will serve as Nas‘ backing band for his headlining performance at the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival on July 16. And today, the Soul Rebels announce they’ll be linking up with both Kweli and Wu-Tang Clan MC GZA for a performance at this weekend’s Electric Forest music festival in Michigan.
