Super Bowl Ad Propels Pet Shop Boys’ ‘Opportunities’ on Dance Charts

Pet Shop Boys bound onto Billboard‘s Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales chart (dated Feb. 20) at No. 5 with “Opportunities (Let’s Make Lots of Money),” following the Feb. 6 Super Bowl premiere of an Allstate insurance commercial featuring the song. The 1986 classic sold 1,000 downloads, up 1,618%, in the week ending Feb. 11, according to MRC Data.

The song is the iconic UK act’s first top 10 and best career position on the chart, which began in 2010.


The duo of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe also re-enters the list at No. 23 with “West End Girls” (nearly 500 sold, up 109%). At a new peak, PSB’s debut 1986 Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 previously hit No. 28 on the sales tally in 2011.

“Opportunities” — which also earned 106,000 streams, up 65%, in the tracking week — is another of Pet Shop Boys’ five Hot 100 top 10s, having hit No. 10 as the follow-up to “West End Girls.” “Opportunities” reached No. 3 on Dance Club Songs, among the act’s 31 career top 10s, the most among duos or groups and fourth-most overall (after Madonna, with 64; Rihanna, 37; and Janet Jackson, 34). PSB’s 11 No. 1s, a run that began with “West End Girls,” are the most among duos/groups on the chart, which began in 1976 (and has been on hiatus during the coronavirus pandemic since last March).

Shifting to Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, Martin Garrix grabs a No. 10 debut with “Pressure,” featuring Tove Lo. The Dutch DJ’s eighth top 10 and the Swedish singer’s second starts with 1.5 million U.S. streams. With close to 1,000 sold, the track also bows at No. 14 on Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales.

On Dance/Mix Show Airplay, Travis Scott and HVME each reign for the first time with “Goosebumps” (3-1). The track is collecting core-dance airplay on leaders KMVQ-HD2 San Francisco, Music Choice’s Dance/EDM channel and WCPY Chicago, among others. (The Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart measures radio airplay on a select group of full-time dance stations, along with plays during mix shows on nearly 80 top 40-formatted reporters.)

“Goosebumps” posts its second frame atop Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, which it topped for the first time a week ago.

Further on Dance/Mix Show Airplay, Lodato achieves his third top 10 and Bright Sparks scores its second with “Good Thing” (12-4). Plus, Benny Benassi and Jeremih each bolt to a third top 10 with “Lovelife” (16-9).
