Sunmi Earns Fifth Top 5 Hit on World Digital Song Sales Chart With ‘Lalalay’
Sunmi's on a roll with a new single "Lalalay" marking her fifth single to hit the Top 5 of World Digital Song Sales and securing her as a leader among her fellow K-divas.

Sunmi‘s is one step closer to her Billboard chart dreams with a new single securing her as a leader among her fellow K-divas.
Sunmi’s latest single “Lalalay” debuts at No. 4 on Billboard‘s World Digital Song Sales chart. The blaring and bold anthem sold 1,000 copies in the week ending Aug. 29, according to Nielsen Music. The track is the best-selling K-pop song in America this week and also marks the highest new entry on the chart.
Overall, “Lalalay” bowing at No. 4 marks Sunmi’s fifth Top 5 entry on World Digital Songs in less than two year’s time. The 27-year-old’s first hit the Top 5 with “Gashina” (which hit No. 3 in 2017), and followed up with two more hits the following year (“Heroine” peaked at No. 3 as well in February 2018 with “Siren” hitting No. 5 in September). This year, Sunmi also bowed with “Noir” (which peaked at No. 3 in March) followed by her latest. The only Sunmi song to not go Top 5 was her early 2014 single “Full Moon,” released under her former label home of JYP Entertainment, that peaked at No. 13 on the chart.
Sunmi’s strong string of singles shows her consistency on World Digital Song Sales where female soloists are less frequently seen compared to their boy band and girl group counterparts. Sunmi now becomes the female soloist with the most Top 5 hits among female K-pop soloists, surpassing her previous tie with IU, who has four at the moment. The last solo female act to chart higher than “Lalalay” was Park Bom’s “Spring” featuring Sandara Park, which peaked at No. 2 in March this year.
During her promotions for “Lalalay,” Sunmi spoke to Korea’s local Entertainment Weekly news about her future goal of topping the U.S.-based Billboard charts. “I think Korean artists can also take No. 1 on the Billboard charts,” she said (according to a translation from Soompi). “I hope I will be one of them.” With this latest chart success, the starlet gets one step closer to her goal.
