The speculation has been running rampant since seemingly the end of a bitter, icy winter (at least in much of the U.S.): What will be the top song of the summer of 2014?
Now, we can begin officially making our way toward the answer, as Billboard’s annual Songs of the Summer chart returns to Billboard.com.

The 10-position Songs of the Summer running tally tracks the most popular titles based on cumulative performance on the weekly Billboard Hot 100 chart from Memorial Day through Labor Day. At the end of the season, the top song of the summer will be crowned.

Aided by its racy video and record radio audience levels, Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines,” featuring T.I. and Pharrell Williams, won the title last summer. In 2012, Carly Rae Jepsen’s pop culture-conquering “Call Me Maybe” emerged victorious. LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem,” featuring Lauren Bennett and GoonRock, was the top feel-good summer song of 2011, while, fittingly, Katy Perry’s beach-centric “California Girls,” featuring Snoop Dogg, was tops for 2010. The Black Eyed Peas won the award in 2009 with “I Gotta Feeling,” after Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl” had ruled in 2008.
Early on, summer 2014 looks to be the season of Iggy Azalea. The Australian rapper’s current Hot 100 leader “Fancy,” featuring Charli XCX, ranks at No. 1 on this year’s maiden Songs of the Summer survey, followed by Ariana Grande’s “Problem,” featuring Azalea. With “Fancy” having risen to the Hot 100’s top spot just last week and “Problem” also at its highpoint at No. 2 (and having logged only five weeks on the Hot 100 so far), timing could be on both songs’ sides, with lengthy stays in the Hot 100’s upper ranks looking likely for each hit just as summer starts.
John Legend’s former three-week Hot 100 No. 1 “All of Me” begins at No. 3 on the Songs of the Summer chart, followed by DJ Snake and Lil Jon’s still-rising “Turn Down for What” at No. 4 and Williams’ former 10-week Hot 100 topper “Happy” (arguably the unofficial song of both winter and spring) at No. 5.

Who’ll win this summer’s chart battle? Azalea, via “Fancy” or “Problem”? A newer song like MAGIC!’s “Rude” or Calvin Harris’ “Summer” (both of which start in the Songs of the Summer top 10)? Or, an act that’s yet to chart with a future summer smash? (Maroon 5, for instance, has just announced the June 16 release of “Maps,” from its new album, “V,” due Sept. 2.)
