Spotify announced via Twitter on Thursday (Jan. 4) that the streaming service had hit a new subscription milestone — 70 million users.
The Swedish company’s last subscriber count was released in July 2017, when it counted more than 60 million. While a new total user number — which would include free ad-based accounts — was not revealed, that was claimed to be upwards of 140 million last June.
In comparison, last September, Apple Music — widely considered to be Spotify’s top competitor — told Billboard it had hit more than 30 million subscribers. Tidal, meanwhile, has not released any subscription numbers of its own.
The news follows reports that Spotify filed confidential IPO documents with the Securities and Exchange Commission last week, suggesting the streaming leader is ready to list its stock directly onto the New York Stock Exchange in the coming months.
