Artists on Spotify can now use their profiles on the platform to raise money from fans — whether to support themselves, their bands and their crews amid the coronavirus pandemic or for a charity of their choice.
The new feature, dubbed Artist Fundraising Pick, is similar to Artist’s Pick, which allows Spotify For Artists users to select any piece of music to highlight on their profile. Now, artists can also directly link to any fundraiser (as long as it fits within Spotify’s safety policy), or add a link to their Cash App, GoFundMe or PayPal.me account.
“This is an incredibly difficult time for many Spotify users and people around the world — and there are many worthy causes to support at this time,” Spotify wrote in a blog post announcement. “With this feature, we simply hope to enable those who have the interest and means to support artists in this time of great need, and to create another opportunity for our COVID-19 Music Relief partners to find the financial support they need to continue working in music and lift our industry.”
As part of its partnership with Spotify for the feature, Cash App also established a $1 million relief effort for artists. Spotify For Artists users in the U.S. and U.K. who select their “$cashtag” username as their Artist Fundraising pick — and secure at least one donation through Spotify — will receive an extra $100 in their account from Cash App, until the program reaches its $1 million cap.
Already, Marshmello is using the feature to fundraise for MusiCares: “So many of us have been affected by the COVID-19 virus, and now more than ever we need to stand together and help each other,” he said in a press release.
The feature arrives on the heels of Spotify’s COVID-19 Music Relief project, through which the streaming giant is matching donations to select fundraising partners dollar-for-dollar up to a collective total of $10 million. Spotify has additionally made contributions to MusiCares’ relief fund for music professionals who are out of work due to the virus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and World Health Organization.
