SoundCloud announced Tuesday it will start implementing streaming limits on outside websites and third-party applications, capping 15,000 plays per 24-hour period.
The digital streaming service announced the news with a letter to developers also posted on its website Tuesday.
“As the ecosystem has grown, we’re dealing with an increasing number of applications that abuse creator content,” the letter reads. “To help us limit this type of behaviour, we’re introducing a daily rate limit on API play requests.
According to a representative, this limit does not pertain to SoundCloud embeds, which are commonly used to promote new releases and can far exceed 15,000 listen in a day on more popular tracks. It only relates to applications aside from that use the SoundCloud API to stream music via SoundCloud on their own platform.
The 15,000 play count per 24 hour period relates to each individual app across all its plays.
