Sony Music and Noah Cyrus Go Back to School for New Music Education Program
Sony Music Group has partnered with prominent nonprofits Save the Music and Music Forward to launch a new program called Beyond the Instrument.
Sony Music Group has partnered with prominent nonprofits Save the Music and Music Forward to launch a new program giving high school students in Nashville a leg up in charting a career in the music industry.
The annual initiative, dubbed Beyond the Instrument, kicks off Monday (March 8) at Antioch High School with a virtual classroom visit by program ambassador and Nashville native Noah Cyrus and will consist of a four-week series of Music Forward-led workshops at the school, covering topics ranging from Music Business 101 to Music Marketing and more.
The program will also fund Save The Music’s J Dilla Music Technology Grant, a comprehensive package of musical instruments, sound engineering equipment, and technology software that will arrive at Antioch by the start of the 2021/22 school year and “empower … students through learning the fundamentals of electronic music creation, recording, and production,” Sony said.
“Beyond The Instrument is collaborating with first-class community partners, artists and songwriters to enhance music education programs and develop opportunities for underserved communities,” said Towalame Austin, executive vp, philanthropy and social impact at SMG, adding the company was thrilled to “continue SMG’s dedication and commitment to providing educational resources for the next generation of music professionals.”
Cyrus extolled the benefits of learning the ins and outs of music at an early age and said she was excited to give back to Nashville, “a city that’s very near and dear” to her heart.
“Music has always been such a huge part of my life and I was extremely fortunate to grow up in a family where I was constantly surrounded by music,” she said. “I really experienced the benefits firsthand of learning and creating music at a very young age, providing me an emotional outlet and passion that I am still beyond thankful for everyday.”
The Beyond the Instrument initiative is currently exclusive to Antioch HS, part of the Nashville Metro Public School system.
