Sony Latin-Iberia Acquires Stake in Walter Kolm’s WK Records

Sony's investment will support WK's current roster and future repertoire.

Sony Music Entertainment Latin-Iberia has acquired a stake in WK Records (WKR), the fast-growing indie record label founded by Latin mega-manager Walter Kolm. The investment aims to support WK’s future repertoire and expand the realm of possibilities available to its artists. WKR’s roster of over 20 artists includes reggaetón rising star Alex Rose, Argentine trap star Seven Kayne, Colombia’s Cheo Gallego and Dominican-American veteran trap act Fuego.

Sony is already a partner in WK Entertainment – Kolm’s marquee management firm whose clients include Maluma, Carlos Vives, CNCO, Wisin, Prince Royce and Emilia.

Now, the partnership with WK Records, which will continue to be distributed by The Orchard, further solidifies the links between Sony and Kolm. Currently, all WK Entertainment artists are signed to Sony. Although the terms of the deal were not disclosed, majority ownership of WKR will remain with Kolm.

“When I created WK, my goal was to have a label through which to sign and develop talent and produce top-rate content for all platforms at a time when Latin music has been exploding,” Kolm tells Billboard. “We proved we could do this successfully and in record time. Now, with Sony as a partner, we can amplify those strides even more.”

“We have an incredible relationship with the entire WK family,” adds Afo Verde, chairman and CEO, Sony Music Latin-Iberia. “This was a natural next step for us, and we’re excited to work with WK Records to launch a whole new generation of international superstars together.”

For Kolm, the partnership is especially meaningful, “because of the trust and admiration that I have for Rob Stringer, Afo Verde and Sony Music. It confirms our shared vision to continue to lead and impact the Latin music industry with an unparalleled world-wide magnitude.”

Kolm founded WK in 2020 in the middle of the pandemic, in what could have been seen as a risky move. But by 2021, the label ended the year as one of Billboard’s top 10 labels, and Kolm expanded his operation to include a pop and urban division led by WKR general manager Oscar Guitián, and a regional Mexican division led by Alberto De León. Last August, Horacio Rodríguez, former senior VP of marketing at Universal Music Latino, came in as CEO and head of music at WKE, overseeing all label operations.

“This partnership will be the key driving force behind WK Records ambition to become one of the top Latin music companies in the world,” said Rodríguez.

WKR’s recent hits include smash “Fiel” by Los Legendarios, Wisin and Jhay Cortez, which was released in partnership with Wisin’s La Base Music Group, and reached the top 10 of Billboard’s Global Excl. US chart; Alex Rose & Rauw Alejandro’s “Me Fije;” and Fuego, Duki and Manuel Turizo’s “Una Vaina Loca.”
