Somi Makes Top 10 Debut on World Digital Song Sales Chart

Jeon Somi has finally made her official solo debut and scores not one but two Top 10 entries on her first try with "Birthday" and "Outta My Head."

Almost four years after the K-pop world was first introduced to her, Somi has finally made her official solo debut and scores not one but two top 10 entries on first try.

The 18-year-old sends her debut solo single “Birthday” to No. 7 on Billboard’s World Digital Song Sales chart. The sassy bubblegum cut sold 1,000 copies in the week ending June 13, according to Nielsen Music. “Birthday” was released alongside the acoustic-leaning, b-side track “Outta My Head” which bows at No. 9 on the chart.

Somi’s K-pop path is a bit unconventional with her time in the temporary girl group I.O.I (which scored two entries on World Digital Songs, peaking at No. 4 with “Very Very Very” in 2016) as well as her time as a solo artist under former label JYP Entertainment, so the singer’s track record is a little hard to make parallel chart comparisons. As the most recent former girl-group member to turn to a solo career, Somi is the highest-charting singer since Park Bom made her chart comeback with the No. 2-peaking “Spring” featuring Sandara Park back in March.

It’s long been wondered what sound Somi would embrace for her eventual debut, and her single “Birthday” strikes a balance between the fierce fun of her labelmates BLACKPINK and the feel-good empowerment of Meghan Trainor. The accompanying music video is colorful and playful with the starlet rocking both name-brand fits (with bold pieces from Versace, Balmain, Prada and Nike making appearances) along whimsical D.I.Y. looks (like creating floating pigtails with balloons attached to the ends). Even more strikingly, the swayingly tender R&B track song “Outta My Head” was penned entirely as well as co-produced by the young singer indicating loads of potential as a songwriter as well.
