As Solange crowns the Billboard 200 and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart (dated Oct. 22) with her latest set, A Seat At The Table, six songs from the album arrive on the Hot R&B Songs chart. It’s the first time that the singer has appeared on the four-year-old, 25-position list.
The arrivals are led by “Cranes In The Sky,” which bows at No. 11. The entrance is powered by 5.3 million U.S. weekly streams in the week ending Oct. 9, according to Nielsen Music. Of all the tracks on the album, the song accumulated the most weekly clicks. It also had the highest digital sales, with 7,000 downloads contributing to its rank.
“Cranes” is followed by “Don’t Touch My Hair,” featuring Sampha, at No. 14 (4.9 million streams and 4,000 downloads).
Both debuts have official music videos that were released in tandem on Oct. 2. To date, “Don’t Touch My Hair” leads in global views with 5.5 million, while “Cranes” follows with 3.3 million.
Over on the Billboard Hot 100, the two leading songs become Solange’s first ever entries, with “Cranes” arriving at No. 74 and “Hair” bowing at No. 91.

Over on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, three new Solange songs enter the 50-position chart: “Cranes In The Sky” (No. 28), “Mad” (No. 25), and “Don’t Touch My Hair” (No. 38). It’s the first time since 2009 that Solange has had a charting hit there. She most recently peaked at No. 62 with “T.O.N.Y,” from her sophomore studio set Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams, in 2009.
Solange concurrently debuts at No. 8 on the Billboard Artist 100, which blends album sales, track sales, radio airplay, streaming and social media data to measure artist popularity across all genres.
“False Alarm” Arrives: The Weeknd earns the highest debut on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, as “False Alarm” notches a No. 23 entry. The singer released the track just eight days after dropping the title track from his forthcoming album, Starboy, slated to come out on November 25.
While “Starboy” remains at No. 1 on the chart for a second consecutive week (taking both Airplay Gainer and Streaming Gainer honors, with an increase in digital sales as well), “False Alarm” arrives with 4.8 million weekly streams – contributing the bulk of its debut points.
Unlike the focus single “Starboy,” the latest charting track lacks any significant radio play so far. Apart from streams, “False Alarm” is also powered by 21,000 downloads.
Mary J. Blige’s 52nd Entry: R&B singer and Billboard chart veteran Mary J. Blige scores her 52nd chart entry on the Adult R&B Songs airplay chart as “Thick Of It” bows at No. 17 – earning the Hot Shot Debut. It’s her second-best entrance on the chart, following “Whole Damn Year,” which arrived at No. 15 in 2014.
Blige extends her record for most songs on the chart by a female act (Mariah Carey trails with 33), while inching closer to the record among all acts held by R. Kelly with 54 charting hits.
The new single, co-penned by Jazmine Sullivan, will appear on Blige’s forthcoming set, Strength of a Woman, due before the end of the year.
