Selena Gomez rockets to the top five of the Social 50 chart (dated Feb. 18), re-entering to No. 4 thanks to the promise of new music. Beyonce also blasts back to the top 10, sparked by the announcement of her pregnancy.
The Social 50 is powered by data tracked by music analytics company Next Big Sound and ranks the most popular artists on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Wikipedia and Tumblr. The chart’s methodology blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with artist page views and engagement.
Gomez posted a snippet of new material to her Instagram story, which disappears for all users after 24 hours (think Snapchat’s similar story function), Feb. 3. But, not all was lost; afterward, she posted a black-and-white photo of herself that tagged EDM producer Kygo, fueling rumors that the pair have worked on a new song together. Then, Interscope Records this week teased that a single by them (billed as by Selena Gomez x Kygo) is on the way “soon.”
Gomez gathered a whopping 18.9 million Instagram reactions in the tracking week ending Feb. 5, according to Next Big Sound, landing the singer her highest rank on the list since she placed at No. 3 on the Sept. 3, 2016-dated tally.
Meanwhile, Beyonce‘s pregnancy announcement (of twins!) on Feb. 1, via her Instagram account, sparks the superstar’s 34-8 vault on the Social 50 (her best rank since a No. 4 placement in early October). She collected 8.3 million Instagram reactions in the tracking week (up 152 percent).
“We would like to share our love and happiness,” Beyonce wrote accompanying the photo that delivered the news, also speaking for hubby Jay Z and first child (and chart record-holder) Blue Ivy Carter. “We have been blessed two times over.”
The image, an artful shot of Beyonce showing off her growing belly, became the most-liked photo ever on Instagram less than a day after the image was posted. Through Feb. 7, it has amassed 10.1 million likes, surpassing the 6.4 million of the previous record-holder: a glamorous photo of – guess who? – Gomez sipping Coca Cola (uploaded by the pop star) that also doubled as an ad for the beverage company.
Further down the Social 50, Red Velvet debuts at No. 44. The South Korean K-pop group released a new album, Rookie, on Feb. 1. The album debuted at No. 1 on World Albums. As part of its release, Red Velvet garnered 5 million Instagram reactions in the tracking week, up 125 percent.
