Emerging Artists Spotlight: Sleep On It

This week's Emerging Artists Spotlight is pop punk outfit Sleep On It, who debuted at No. 31 on the chart dated Oct. 5 thanks to the release of their sophomore album Pride & Disaster.

Welcome to Emerging Artists Spotlight, the Billboard series where we highlight a musician or band who has recently made their debut on the Emerging Artists chart. Whether they are new to the industry, or have been around for a while but are just starting to have a chart impact, the intention is to showcase where they are here and now. This week’s pick is pop punk outfit Sleep On It, who debuted at No. 31 on the chart dated Oct. 5 thanks to the release of their sophomore album Pride & Disaster.

Sleep On It is as pure as pop punk can get. With the release of their latest brightly melodic record, the band hearkens back to the genre’s mid-2000s glory days with lyrically-driven shout-and-sing tracks like “Under the Moment” and “Hold Your Breath.”

The Chicago-bred foursome — lead vocalist Zach Pluister, guitarists TJ Horansky and Jake Marquis and drummer Luka Fischman — make their debut on the Emerging Artists chart this week at No. 31 following the unveiling of Pride & Disaster via Albany-based indie label Equal Vision Records. The LP rises 13-9 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart in its second week, moving 1,000 copies in each of the two weeks since its release.

Brimming with buoyant positivity, the band’s latest full-length studio set makes a case for focusing on the good times — even while tackling poignant topics like mental health and overcoming adversity.

“Our new album deals a lot with confronting your own ego, trying to learn from mistakes and moving on,” guitarist TJ Horansky tells Billboard by email. “Allowing yourself forgiveness and room to grow is so important. Sadness is a very real and powerful emotion, but life is so much more than that. We tried to capture life’s ups-and-downs with our music because even through the worst times, there are things worth celebrating.”

The group first debuted on Billboard’s charts back in 2017 with their debut album Overexposed, which both debuted and peaked at No. 6 on the Heatseekers Albums chart.

Outside Of the Music: “In between fantasy football and hockey, we feel pretty passionately about finding a good bowl of ramen and tasty sushi while traveling,” Horansky says. “While eagerly anticipating [the film] Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, we’ve also been discussing Star Wars theories and lamenting how we haven’t visited Galaxy’s Edge [at Disneyland] yet.”

What’s next: “We are currently on tour with Don Broco, Trash Boat and Selfish Things until Oct. 13,” Horansky says. “We have a couple Chicago shows before the end of the year (including one with Mayday Parade!). We are also working on a heavy year of touring in 2020!
