SiriusXM has now joined the ranks of music streaming platforms with a discounted subscription for college students.
The platform’s new “Student Premier” package costs just $4 per month for eligible students. That’s a 69% discount off the regular Premier subscription, which is $12.99 per month, while offering all the same content — including more than 200 commercial-free music channels, talk shows encompassing comedy, sports and news and a slate of new personalized stations offered through Pandora.
The student package gives subscribers streaming access on the SiriusXM app and web player, as well as on connected home (or dorm) devices like Amazon Alexa, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV and others. All this is part of SiriusXM’s recent push to attract listeners “outside the car.”
“Today’s college students grew up listening to SiriusXM in their parent’s car, and now we have a package built just for them,” said SiriusXM Outside the Car vice president Matt Epstein. “Our Student Premier Package enables students to have their own subscription and continue to enjoy the SiriusXM programming they love in their dorm room, at home or on the go.”
Student Premier is by far the cheapest streaming option offered by SiriusXM. In April, it also launched an $8 streaming-only plan geared toward listeners without cars — roughly half the price of SiriusXM’s in-car packages, which start at $15.99 per month.
Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora and Deezer are among the streaming services which also offer a discounted subscription for students.
