Silk Sonic’s ‘Smokin’ Rises to No. 1 on Adult R&B Airplay Chart

The duo of Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak return to the summit, and the single also makes inroads on rhythmic and pop radio.

Silk Sonic’s “Smokin Out the Window” drifts to No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart dated Jan. 29 (rising from No. 2). The new leader is the second champ for the duo of Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak, and becomes the most played song at U.S. monitored adult R&B radio stations despite a 2% drop in plays in the week ending Jan. 23, according to MRC Data.

“Smokin” gives Silk Sonic its second No. 1 among three chart entries. The pair’s first offering, “Leave the Door Open,” dominated for 13 weeks in 2021, and on the latest edition, ranks at No. 10 in its 47th chart week. Between the two chart-toppers, Silk Sonic’s second single, “Skate,” peaked at No. 4.

All three singles appear on the twosome’s An Evening With Silk Sonic album. The set, released in November, debuted at No. 1 on the Top R&B Albums chart and ranks at No. 5 on the latest published list, in its 10th week.

As Silk Sonic entries contribute to the individual chart accounts of both Mars and .Paak, “Smokin” makes for Mars’ sixth Adult R&B No. 1. It joins this crew:

  • “Uptown Funk,” Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars, three weeks at No. 1, beginning April 25, 2015
  • “24K Magic,” three, March 11, 2017
  • “That’s What I Like,” six, July 8, 2017
  • “Finesse,” with Cardi B, three, April 28, 2018
  • “Leave the Door Open,” Silk Sonic, 13, April 3, 2021

For Anderson .Paak, both of his Adult R&B champs have occurred during his Silk Sonic tenure. Outside of the project, his best showing was a No. 2 result for “Make It Better,” featuring Smokey Robinson, in October 2019.

Elsewhere, the Adult R&B coronation helps “Smokin” improve its standing on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, which ranks based on audience from both adult-leaning and mainstream-oriented R&B/hip-hop radio stations. There, though “Smokin” repeats at No. 2, it adds 11% in audience to 21.7 million in the week ending Jan. 23. The gains help “Smokin” inch closer to potentially completing a feat months in the making – dethroning the current champ, Wizkid’s “Essence,” featuring Tems, which has reigned for 22 consecutive weeks.

Beyond the R&B world, “Smokin” scoots 6-4 to a new peak on Rhythmic Airplay, where it rose 9% in plays in the latest tracking week. It similarly climbs two spots on Pop Airplay (18-16), and returns to one slot below its peak, but declines 2% in weekly plays.
