Shinedown & Cage the Elephant Add New No. 1s on Rock Charts

Shinedown and Cage the Elephant add new No. 1s, while Foals scores a first top 10.

Shinedown adds to its lofty tally of No. 1s on Billboard‘s Mainstream Rock Songs radio airplay chart (dated Feb. 6), as “State of My Head” jumps 3-1.

With the new No. 1, the Florida rockers score their 10th topper, tying Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (combining the group’s six No. 1s and Petty’s four solo leaders) for the third-most in the chart’s 35-year history. Only Van Halen (13) and Three Days Grace (12) boast more.

“State” is the second single from Shinedown’s fifth album Threat to Survival. Lead track “Cut the Cord” spent seven weeks at No. 1 beginning Aug. 8, 2015. The band first reached the summit with “Save Me” (the lead single from Shinedown’s sophomore effort Us & Them), which led for 12 weeks beginning in November 2005.

THEY’RE NOT MESSING AROUND: Cage the Elephant‘s “Mess Around” steps 2-1 on Adult Alternative Songs, becoming the band’s second No. 1 on the chart. “Come a Little Closer,” the lead single from the band’s 2013 record Melophobia, spent two weeks at the pinnacle in March 2014. It also led Alternative Songs for 10 weeks.

“Closer” is certainly no one-format hit. The song is again situated at its high of No. 2 on Alternative Songs, while it reaches a new peak of No. 16 on Mainstream Rock Songs.

FOALS’ FIRST: Foals complete their first trip to the Alternative Songs chart’s top 10, as “Mountain at My Gates” hikes 11-8.

The song marks the English quintet’s first airplay top 10 in its decade-long career. It’s also crossed over to Adult Alternative Songs, where it ranks at No. 26 after debuting on the Jan. 30 chart at No. 23, and is bubbling under Mainstream Rock Songs.

Foals’ debut album Antidotes was released in 2008. The band first made a Billboard songs chart in 2013, when lead Holy Fire single “Inhaler” peaked at No. 20 on Alternative Songs.
