Shawn Mendes Is the Youngest Male Artist to Top the Billboard 200 With Four Regular Studio Albums

As Billboard reported on Sunday, Shawn Mendes enters the Billboard 200 at No. 1 with his fourth studio album, Wonder. At 22 years, four months and two weeks old — hey, we’re exact here at Billboard — Mendes is the fourth-youngest artist in history to log four No. 1 titles on the Billboard 200, and he’s the youngest male artist to top the chart with four regular studio albums.

What’s a “regular studio album”? It’s artists’ bread-and-butter releases — full-length collections of new songs. It excludes such ancillary releases as live albums, greatest hits sets, Christmas albums, and remix albums.

Let’s take a look at all the artists who logged four No. 1 titles before their 23rd birthdays. The dates shown are Billboard chart dates, which for Mendes is Dec. 19. (We’re counting all kinds of releases here, but FYI, we’ve flagged all releases that weren’t regular studio albums.)

1. Miley Cyrus – 16 years, five months, one week: The onetime Disney star landed her fourth No. 1, Hannah Montana: The Movie, a film soundtrack, on May 2, 2009. Her first three No. 1s were Hannah Montana (a TV soundtrack), the double-disc Hannah Montana 2/Meet Miley Cyrus (half TV soundtrack, half studio album) and Breakout.

2. Justin Bieber – 18 years, four months and one week: The Biebs landed his fourth No. 1, Believe, on July 7, 2012. That made him the youngest male solo artist and the youngest solo artist who was born outside of the U.S. to land four No. 1s — records he still holds. His first three No. 1s were My World 2.0, Never Say Never: The Remixes (a seven-song remix album) and Under the Mistletoe (a holiday album).

3. Britney Spears – 22 years, one week: Spears earned her fourth No. 1 with her fourth studio album, In the Zone, on Dec. 6, 2003. She previously led the tally with her first three studio sets: …Baby One More TimeOops!…I Did It Again and Britney.

4. Shawn Mendes – 22 years, four months and two weeks: Mendes lands his fourth No. 1, Wonder, this week (Billboard chart date Dec. 19, 2020). His first three No. 1s were Handwritten, Illuminate and Shawn Mendes.

5. Elvis Presley – 22 years, 11 months and one week: The King landed his fourth No. 1, Elvis’ Christmas Album (a holiday album) on Dec. 16, 1957. His first three No. 1s were Elvis Presley, Elvis and Loving You (a film soundtrack).

Editor’s note: This story has been updated to include Spears, who remains the youngest artist with four No. 1 regular studio albums. Mendes is the youngest male soloist with four No. 1 regular studio albums.
