Seventeen changed up their sound and style for their latest release and it’s led to some impressive, new chart accomplishments.
The 13-member boy band’s new EP titled ?Al1: 4th Mini Album debuts at No. 2 on Billboard‘s World Albums chart and is this week’s best-selling K-pop album. The accomplishment also marks Seventeen’s best sales week overall in America with the six-track EP selling 2,000 copies in the week ending May 25, according to Nielsen Music. That beats their previous best when their full-length album Love&Letter debuted with a little more than 1,000 sold in early 2016.
AI1 marks Seventeen’s fifth consecutive release to land in the Top 10 of World Albums. The group started in 2015 with their 17 Carat EP (which debuted at No. 9 before eventually rising to No. 8 in later weeks) and followed with their Boys Be EP later that year (which, so far, marks their only No. 1 on World Albums). In 2016, Seventeen released Love&Letter (which peaked at No. 3) and their Going Seventeen EP (which also peaked at No. 3).
Seventeen also debuts at No. 10 on Heatseekers Albums — a chart that sees much less K-pop acts rank — which is their third entry on the tally. Seventeen sent Love&Letter to Heatseekers (which peaked at No. 5) and Going Seventeen (No. 9).
While Seventeen has quickly garnered a large domestic and international fanbase for their cheery and upbeat productions, the AI1 record marks a sonic and creative change for the guys, seeing them embrace electronic music and a more melancholy feel. Lead single “Don’t Wanna Cry” utilizes the same emotional EDM sound that has made The Chainsmokers such a chart force, but brings the focus to the band’s unique vocals. Meanwhile, different sects of the K-pop team get shine with members in Seventeen’s “hip-hop team” (which consists of S.Coups, Wonwoo, Mingyu and Vernon) handling “If I,” the “performance team” (which is Hoshi, Jun, The8 and Dino) handling the clubby standout “Swimming Fool.”
Seventeen also has this week’s best-selling K-pop song with “Don’t Wanna Cry” debuting at No. 3 on the World Digital Song Sales chart. It’s their second-best showing on the chart after 2016’s “Nice Very Nice” debuted at No. 2 on the chart with 3,000 copies sold. Watch the guys bring new AI1 track “Crazy in Love” to life below:
