Sam Smith’s ‘Too Good at Goodbyes’ Jumps Into Streaming Songs Top Five
"Too Good at Goodbyes" jumps 14-5, marking Smith's best Streaming Songs rank in three years.
Sam Smith’s ”Too Good at Goodbyes” reaches a new peak on Billboard’s Streaming Songs chart, jumping 14-5 on the ranking dated Nov. 25.
The song, which accumulated 27.2 million streams in the tracking week ending Nov. 9, according to Nielsen Music, leaps 40 percent in overall streams following the release of Smith’s sophomore album, The Thrill of It All. Concurrently, the set bows atop the Billboard 200, earning 237,000 equivalent album units.
Smith’s Streaming Songs rank is his highest in three years. Previously, his breakout hit “Stay with Me” peaked at No. 4 for two weeks (Aug. 16, 2014). Its follow-ups, “I’m Not the Only One” and “Lay Me Down,” peaked at Nos. 8 and 9, respectively, the next year.
“Goodbyes” is aided by 14.7 million on-demand audio streams, good for No. 3 on the On-Demand Streaming Songs chart (his best since “Stay,” which ruled for three weeks) as the ranking’s greatest gainer. The song also debuted at No. 3 when it was initially released, scoring 15 million streams on the chart dated Sept. 30.
The streaming boost, coupled with bumps in digital sales and radio airplay, helps “Goodbyes” to a new peak on the Billboard Hot 100, moving 10-4 after previously bowing at No. 5 (Sept. 30).
In other Streaming Songs news, Lil Uzi Vert’s “The Way Life Goes,” featuring Oh Wonder, rockets 36-16, scoring 18 million streams (up 48 percent). The chief culprit behind the gain, which shoots the song to its best Streaming Songs rank since its No. 14 debut (Sept. 16), is a newly released remix featuring Nicki Minaj.
Also, Taylor Swift debuts on Streaming Songs on the eve of her new album Reputation’s release with its fourth pre-release offering, “Call It What You Want.” The song starts at No. 50 with 9.7 million streams, 6.5 million of which are on-demand audio streams (good for No. 39 on On-Demand Streaming Songs, the chart’s top debut). All four songs from Reputation pre-release have charted on Streaming Songs, led by “Look What You Made Me Do” (two weeks at No. 1, Sept. 16) and followed by “…Ready for It?” (No. 11, Sept. 23), “Gorgeous” (No. 16, Nov. 11) and “Call.”
