Sam Smith’s ‘The Thrill of It All’ Leads U.K.’s Midweek Chart
"The Thrill of It All" opens up a massive lead in the race to the U.K. No. 1.
Sam Smith has a thrilling few days ahead of him as his sophomore album, The Thrill of It All (Capitol), takes an early lead in the race to the U.K. No. 1.
Smith’s latest LP bolts to the top of the midweek chart with more than 60,000 equivalent sales in the three days since its Nov. 3 release, according to the Official Charts Company. It’s a substantial lead which is unlikely to be reeled in. Smith’s nearest competitor is A Love So Beautiful (Sony Music CG), a collection of Roy Orbison classics re-imagined by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra which has moved about 20,000 units.
Smith will be hopeful of going two-from-two. His debut album, In The Lonely Hour, went straight to the top in June 2014 with 102,000 units shifted in week one. The album spent eight non-consecutive weeks at the summit and is poised for a top 20 re-entry; it’s at No. 19 on the Official Chart Update. Early forecasts suggest Smith should also lock up No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
Meanwhile, last week’s No. 1 U.K. album, Michael Ball & Alfie Boe’s Together Again (Decca) dips to No. 3 on the midweek tally while George Michael’s Listen Without Prejudice (Sony Music CG) holds at No. 4, and Pink’s Beautiful Trauma (RCA) comes in at No. 5.
Canadian rock veteran Bryan Adams could earn a tenth top 10 album with his new hits set, Ultimate (Polydor), which starts at No. 6 while Maroon 5′s sixth studio effort Red Pill Blues (Interscope) sits just outside the top tier at No. 11.
Camila Cabello was made to wait patiently for her first solo bestseller as “Havana” (Epic/Syco/Sony), featuring Young Thug, last Friday reached the top after 13 weeks on the chart and three weeks at No. 2. “Havana” will likely get at least another week in charge. It’s leading the midweek chart with a 6,000 equivalent sales lead over Post Malone’s second-placed “Rockstar” (Republic) featuring 21 Savage, the song it dethroned for the chart crown.
