Sam Smith’s “Palace” rises 4-1 on Billboard & Clio’s Top TV Commercials chart, powered by Shazam, for December, thanks to the song’s appearance in Apple iPhone X’s “Sway” commercial.
Using tagging data from Shazam, as well as sales and streaming information tracked by Nielsen Music, Billboard partners with Clio Music each month to present a chart ranking the top songs in commercials. Rankings exclude any song that has recently charted within the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 or top 10 on a genre chart.
“Palace,” which is the ninth track on Smith’s latest album The Thrill of It All, debuted on the November ranking at No. 4. The set debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in November. “Palace” — co-written by Smith, country singer Cam and Tyler Johnson — leads all songs in December with 187,000 Shazam tags, 54,000 downloads sold and 13.7 million U.S. streams, according to Nielsen Music. The track reached No. 35 on the Digital Song Sales chart dated Dec. 23.
The song is the first No. 1 for Smith on this chart, and the sixth No. 1 for an Apple commercial, dating back to the chart’s inception in January 2016. Apple’s sixth chart-topper breaks the record for most months at No. 1 by a company in the chart’s brief history. Honda previously held the record, with five months atop the ranking.
Just below Smith on the Top TV Commercials chart, Sia lands two songs in the top 10: “Chandelier” re-enters the chart at No. 4 after its appearance in Dior’s “For Love” ad, and “The Greatest,” featuring Kendrick Lamar, rises 9-8 thanks to Peloton’s “Give It All” commercial.
“Chandelier,” which reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in August 2014, earns its placement on the strength of 47,000 Shazam tags, 15,000 downloads sold and 11.6 million U.S. streams in December. The track previously reached No. 2 on the September chart, also thanks to Dior’s “For Love” ad.
“The Greatest” rises on the chart after tallying 11,000 Shazam tags, 18,000 downloads and 8.1 million U.S. streams. The track peaked at No. 18 on the Hot 100 in December 2016.
With “Chandelier,” “The Greatest” and her previous entry, “Move Your Body” from Lexus’ “Man And Machine” ad last year, Sia is part of a select group of acts with three different entries on the chart. Only Sia, Queen, Imagine Dragons and Beyonce have landed three separate tracks on the Top TV Commercials chart.
Imagine Dragons joins that group of artists this month, as “Whatever It Takes” debuts on the chart at No. 7 after its appearance in Jeep’s “Weather Report” commercial. The song earned 11,000 Shazam tags, 37,000 downloads sold and 9 million U.S. streams in December. The rock group had previously landed on the chart with “Believer” and “Thunder.”
Finally, Harry Styles’ debut single “Sign of The Times” opens at No. 12 on the chart after appearing in Google’s “Year In Search 2017” ad.
Thanks to the commercial, the song logged 1,000 Shazam tags, 15,000 downloads sold and 11.5 million U.S. streams. The song debuted and peaked at No. 4 on the Hot 100 in April and reached No. 24 on the Adult Alternative Songs chart in June.
