Razor & Tie Founders Kick Off New Label With Sugar Ray, Jesus Jones Releases

Razor & Tie founders Craig Balsam and Cliff Chenfeld have launched a new catalog-driven label called RT Industries. The indie imprint, which is being distributed by ADA, will focus on the curation, development and marketing of classic recordings and officially makes its debut on Record Store Day.
The label’s opening roster includes seven artist catalogs acquired from Warner Music Group’s divestment program in Europe: Sugar Ray, Jesus Jones, Sheena Easton, Fat Joe, Trapt, Black Oak Arkansas and The Vapors. RTI’s first trio of releases include a 7″ of Sugar Ray’s hit “Fly” on clear vinyl; Jesus Jones’ “Zeroes & Ones,” remixed by Aphex Twin and The Prodigy; and a 7″ of The Vapors’ “Turning Japanese” on red vinyl.
With the acquisition, RT Industries said it has full worldwide rights to “all hit singles” by the artists, meaning songs like Sugar Ray’s “Every Morning,” Jesus Jones’ “Right Here Right Now” and Fat Joe’s “What’s Luv?” to name a few.
“I would describe RT Industries as ‘a startup with a track record’,” said Balsam. “We have staff in both New York and London, and our partnership with ADA extends our reach around the world. We have, from Day One, almost 1,000 recorded music copyrights and our objective is not only to maximize their potential across all platforms, but also to position these records and artists accurately in the history books of rock and pop.”
Balsam and Chenfeld sold their remaining stakes in Razor & Tie, which they founded in 1990, to Concord Music in January.
