YouTube’s chief business officer, Robert Kyncl, is stepping down in October, a YouTube spokesperson confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter on Monday.
Kyncl will be succeeded by Mary Ellen Coe, currently the president of global customer solutions at Google, on Oct. 3.
“After 12 incredible years, I’ve decided to move on to the next challenge soon. Working alongside creators, artists, media and music companies to transform media has been a privilege,” Kyncl tweeted on Monday.
At YouTube, Kyncl helped lead the launch of the company’s paid subscription offering, YouTube Premium, as well as the company’s entry into original scripted and unscripted content, called YouTube Originals. Though the original programming effort, then overseen by TV veteran Susanne Daniels, resulted in hit shows like Cobra Kai, Kyncl said earlier this year that YouTube would significantly pull back its original programming and only fund projects from its Black Voices and YouTube Kids funds moving forward.
But the longtime executive was also key in bolstering YouTube’s business relationships with online creators and ensuring YouTube was a top platform for creator monetization; last summer, YouTube said it had paid more than $30 billion to creators over the course of three years, primarily thanks to advertising, merchandise and other service features.
Kyncl, who grew up in Czechoslovakia, joined the Google-owned video giant from Netflix, where he served as vp content for nearly eight years.
