On Aug. 12, 1989, Richard Marx‘s smash hit “Right Here Waiting” topped the Billboard Hot 100 and ruled the chart for three weeks.
In celebration of 30 years since the accomplishment, the crooner took to Twitter on Monday (Aug. 12) to share a video of himself performing the ballad with a guitar. “I’m deeply grateful for this song coming through me, and even more when I look out in the audience night after night, even now, and see and hear everyone singing along with me,” he wrote.

In addition to “Right Here Waiting,” his 1988 tune “Hold On to the Nights” and 1989’s “Satisfied” both topped the Hot 100 for one week each. He boasts nine total Hot 100 top 10s to date and his sophomore album, Repeat Offender, which features “Right Here Waiting,” grabbed the top spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart.
Marx has gone on to further success as a writer for other artists, including *NSYNC and Keith Urban, and in 2014 returned to the Billboard 200’s top 40 with his most recent album of all-new material, Beautiful Goodbye.
