The Year in Charts 2021: Republic Is Top Label of the Year

The company also finishes 2021 as both the Billboard 200 Label and Billboard Hot 100 Label.

For the first time, Republic Records tops all three of Billboard’s leading year-end label rankings. The company is No. 1 on the 2021 year-end Top Labels chart, while also placing atop both the Billboard 200 Labels and Billboard Hot 100 Labels charts.

Republic Records launched in 1995 and has previously been the year-end Top Label in 2019, 2018, 2016 and 2015. Republic is the top Hot 100 Label for the seventh time in the last eight years, excluding 2020. It first reigned as top Hot 100 Label in 2012. This is the first year Republic is the year-end Top Billboard 200 Label.

Billboard’s year-end music Top Labels chart represents aggregated metrics for labels’ performance on the weekly Billboard 200 albums chart and the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart combined during the 2021 charts tracking year: Nov. 21, 2020, through Nov. 13, 2021-dated charts. Any activity registered before or after an album of song’s chart run isn’t considered in this ranking. The individual Billboard Hot 100 Labels and Billboard 200 Labels rankings represent the same measurement, but for each specific chart, during the same tracking period.

During the 2021 tracking year, Republic charted 58 albums on the weekly Billboard 200 chart. Among those are successful releases like Morgan Wallen’s Dangerous: The Double Album (released via Big Loud/Republic), Pop Smoke’s Shoot for the Stars Aim for the Moon (Victor Victor Worldwide/Republic), Taylor Swift’s Evermore (Republic), Drake’s Certified Lover Boy (OVO Sound/Republic) and Ariana Grande’s Positions (Republic) – all of which finish in the top 10 of the 2021 year-end Billboard 200 Albums chart (with all but Positions in the top five). All five also reached No. 1 on the weekly Billboard 200 chart.

Of those 58 charting efforts, 22 placed in the top 10 on the weekly Billboard 200 chart – the most of any label during the 2021 tracking period. Republic also lays claim to the most No. 1 albums during the 2021 chart year with seven: Positions, Shawn Mendes’ Wonder (Island/Republic), Dangerous, Pop Smoke’s Faith (Victor Victor Worldwide/Republic), Certified Lover Boy, Evermore and Swift’s Fearless (Taylor’s Version) (Republic).

On the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart, Republic placed 133 titles on the list during the 2021 tracking year, including 24 top 10s – the most of any label. Among those was a quartet of No. 1s from Swift (“Willow”), Drake (“What’s Next” and “Way 2 Sexy,” featuring Future and Young Thug) and The Weeknd (“Save Your Tears,” with Ariana Grande).

Notably, 12 of Republic’s 24 top 10s came from Drake. Earlier in the year, the superstar made history when he became the first artist to have nine songs in the top 10 at the same time on the weekly Hot 100 chart. On the chart dated Sept. 18, nine songs from his Certified Lover Boy album debuted in the top 10 – including the entire top five.
